Biography

Lorraine Beavers has engaged primarily through debate speeches addressing health inequalities and preventable diseases affecting her Blackpool North and Fleetwood constituency. She has highlighted liver disease as a major public health crisis, raised concerns about alcohol-related harms and cancer, and drawn connections between coastal deprivation and poor health outcomes, while also advocating for improved SEND services and reflecting on cancer care experiences. Her contributions emphasise how systemic failures and underfunding have compounded health challenges in economically disadvantaged communities.

I agree. I thank the Environment Agency, which has worked tirelessly despite massive staff shortages and everything else. It has worked with me and my community to resolve this problem. The passing on of responsibility while communities suffer cannot continue.

What they’ve said

  • …The prolonged stress is also harming my residents’ mental health. Children do not want to play outside, parents have had to keep the windows shut—even during the recent hot weather—and businesses are losing customers.

  • The children with SEND in my constituency are being let down and ignored by the too-large Lancashire county council. Those of my constituents who are also served by Blackpool, a much smaller unitary, are getting the SEND services that they deserve and need.

  • Thank you, Sir Jeremy. It is an honour to serve under your chairship. Today’s debate concerns healthcare in Gaza, but the truth is this: there is almost no healthcare left. Hospitals have been bombed. Doctors and nurses have been killed. Children are having limbs amputated without proper pain relief.

  • …Deaths have risen by more than 40% since 2001, which is in stark contrast to deaths from heart disease and cancer, which have declined. What makes it so heartbreaking is that 90% of liver disease cases are preventable. In my constituency of Blackpool North and Fleetwood, this crisis is felt deeply.

  • …My constituency suffers from more alcohol-related hospital admissions, cancer cases and deaths than the English average. It is a symptom of a community held back by low investment, industrial decline and neglect from national Government.
