Who Amanda Hopgood is

Cllr Amanda Hopgood is a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Framwellgate and Newton Hall division of Durham County Council, first elected in February 2005. She chairs the Local Government Association's Children, Young People and Families Committee, through which she is a regular national spokesperson on children's social care funding, the SEND system, and early years provision. She served as Leader of Durham County Council from May 2021 to May 2025 — the first woman and first non-Labour leader of the council in over 100 years — heading a multi-party coalition. She has argued publicly that children's services face record-high cost pressures driven by rising demand and increasing complexity of need, and has called on government to reform and adequately fund the SEND system.
