Biography

Dr David Zigmond is a retired London GP and psychiatrist who served in the NHS from 1969, working across general medical practice, hospital psychiatry, and psychotherapy. He sits on the Executive Committee of Doctors for the NHS, a campaigning network of medical professionals opposed to the commercialisation and privatisation of NHS services. In the decades following his qualification he trained in general medical practice, psychiatry, and psychotherapy — both psychoanalytic and humanistic — and has written and taught extensively on these themes. He is known for arguing that successive neoliberal NHS reforms have industrialised healthcare and stripped out the personal continuity of care he regards as central to good clinical practice. His Bermondsey GP practice, based at St James Church, was closed by the Care Quality Commission in July 2016 after a magistrates' court order, an episode he has written about extensively as emblematic of what he sees as box-ticking compliance culture overriding clinical judgement. He has published widely in the British Journal of General Practice and openDemocracy, and has produced a book anthology on industrialised humanity and NHS reform.
