Who Ed Hutchinson is

Ed Hutchinson is Professor of Molecular and Cellular Virology at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (MRC CVR), where he leads a research group studying influenza viruses. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge, undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford (2009–2016), and set up his Glasgow group in 2016. His research focuses on the molecular factors that make influenza and other respiratory viruses infectious, including virus particle morphology, composition, and host interactions. He is regularly quoted in UK media and writes for The Conversation on emerging virus threats. He serves as Chair-Elect of the Virus Division of the Microbiology Society, Board Member of the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza, and leads the Steering Group for the UK's Influenza Update Meetings.
