Who Enitan Carrol is

Professor Enitan Carrol is a Professor of Paediatric Infection at the University of Liverpool and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. Her research programme covers serious bacterial infections (including sepsis), biomarker-guided antimicrobial stewardship, and early warning scores for early recognition of deterioration in hospitalised children. She has over 25 years of clinical research experience in hospitalised children with infections in both the UK and Malawi. She has been a member of national and international committees developing guidelines and definitions for paediatric sepsis, including the Society for Critical Care Medicine Pediatric Sepsis Definitions Task Force. In March 2022 she was appointed an NIHR Senior Investigator. She is known for arguing for improved early diagnosis of serious bacterial infection and for the use of biomarker-guided algorithms to support antimicrobial stewardship in children.

“Many of the children who come to hospital have a fever and this test can quickly distinguish between a minor viral illness like a cold, or a more serious infection. Our study is investigating whether this definitive test for a bacterial or viral infection will be useful in helping doctors make faster decisions and reducing the use of unnecessary antibiotics – all of which is better for patients and the NHS.”
