Who Professor Georgina Long is

Professor Georgina Long AO is Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) and Chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at MIA, Royal North Shore Hospital, and the University of Sydney. She is a medical oncologist and clinical trialist specialising in melanoma, leading an extensive clinical trials team focused on immuno-oncology and targeted therapies, including Phase I–III trials in patients with active brain metastases. She completed a PhD in Chemistry and a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute before returning to Australia to qualify in medicine, becoming a Fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians in medical oncology in 2008. She was jointly named 2024 Australian of the Year with colleague Professor Richard Scolyer AO, recognised for their immunotherapy approach that has made advanced melanoma a curable disease for many patients. She is a past president of the Society for Melanoma Research (2018–2020) and is known for publicly advocating against tanning culture and for expanded access to cancer clinical trials.
