Biography
Professor Gill Straker is a clinical professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney and a visiting research professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Born in South Africa, she has a lifetime of experience as a psychotherapist practising in both South Africa and Australia, including counselling victims of trauma and brutality during the apartheid era. She is a chartered clinical psychologist with the British Psychological Society and a member of the clinical college of the Australian Psychological Society. She coined the concept of 'continuous traumatic stress' to describe ongoing stress situations such as domestic violence, child abuse, and political turmoil, distinguishing it from post-traumatic and complex traumatic stress. She co-authored the book 'The Talking Cure' with Dr Jacqui Winship and contributed articles to The Guardian's 'The Modern Mind' column on psychotherapy and mental health.
