Laura Domegan is Head of Nursing at Brook, the national sexual health and wellbeing charity founded in 1964, which provides clinical services, education, and training across the UK. She gave oral evidence to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee's one-off session on Sexual Health Services in England (HC 1394) in 2025, representing Brook alongside the Terrence Higgins Trust. In that session she presented findings from Brook's EASY study, which found that condom use is declining among young people while STI rates and emergency contraception use have risen. She has argued publicly that social media misinformation about contraception — particularly influencer content about side effects — is driving young people away from hormonal methods, and that clinic funding pressures have forced Brook to restrict condom distribution that previously reached school nurses and pharmacists.

“Young people in particular are influenced by what they see and hear about contraception. People in our clinics are increasingly expressing concern about hormonal contraception due to things they have heard on social media. Common myths include that the pill will make you gain weight, will impact your long-term fertility or even affect the kinds of people you are attracted to.”
