Biography

Matthew Hutchinson is an NHS doctor specialising in rheumatology and general internal medicine, and a medical researcher completing a PhD in molecular virology and immunology at UCL and the Francis Crick Institute in King's Cross. He spends part of his working week in a clinical rheumatology setting and part researching at the Crick. He is the author of the 2025 memoir 'Are You Really the Doctor?: My Life as a Black Doctor in the NHS' (Bonnier/Blink), which draws on his clinical career to examine race and discrimination in healthcare. The book addresses challenges faced by ethnic minority clinicians and patients in the NHS, including racial bias in medical textbooks and barriers to leadership roles for non-white staff. He has written and spoken publicly on how structural racism affects both the healthcare workforce and patient experience.
