Biography
Dr Stephan Peronard Mayntz (MD, MPH) is an MD PhD Fellow at the Cardiology Research Unit, Odense University Hospital, Svendborg, Denmark, and is also affiliated with the Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark. He trained in medicine at the University of Southern Denmark (2016–2021) and completed a Master of Public Health at Imperial College London (2021–2023). His research focuses on the relationship between environmental pollutants — specifically road traffic noise and air pollution — and cardiometabolic disease. He is the lead investigator of the AIRCARD prospective cohort study, whose findings on traffic noise as an independent stroke risk factor were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Madrid in 2025 and were widely reported in the UK press.

What they’ve said
“Traffic noise is a significant environmental risk factor for stroke, independently associated with a higher risk even at low levels of air pollution. These findings highlight the need to address traffic noise as part of public health interventions to reduce the stroke burden.”
