Who Valerie Amos is

Baroness Valerie Amos is a Labour life peer and Master of University College, Oxford, a position she has held since September 2020, having previously served as Director of SOAS, University of London (2015–2020). In August 2025 the UK Government appointed her to chair the Independent National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation, a rapid government-commissioned inquiry tasked with reviewing the quality and safety of maternity and neonatal services across England and delivering a clear set of national recommendations. Her team spoke to more than 450 families, received over 10,500 responses from women and families, surveyed over 9,000 staff and visited 12 NHS trusts. Her final report, published on 30 June 2026, found that maternity and neonatal services are no longer fit to consistently deliver high-quality care and called for urgent reform, including establishing a statutory Maternity and Neonatal Commissioner, embedding anti-racist practice at every level, and strengthening accountability. Earlier in her career she served as the first Black woman in a British Cabinet (Secretary of State for International Development, 2003) and as UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs (2010–2015).
