Who Andrew Dillon is

Sir Andrew Dillon CBE FMedSci was the founding chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), appointed in April 1999 when the organisation was established under Tony Blair's government, and retired in March 2020 after 21 years of service. Before NICE, he spent his career in NHS management, serving as general manager of the Royal Free Hospital (1986–1991) and chief executive of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust (1991–1999). Under his leadership, NICE became the world's most prominent health technology assessment body, developing evidence-based guidelines and cost-effectiveness appraisals covering medicines and treatments on the NHS in England, with influence extending to Wales and Northern Ireland. He was publicly known for challenging pharmaceutical companies on drug pricing and for championing transparent, evidence-based decision-making in health and care. Since leaving NICE, he has been a visiting professor at the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and works as an independent consultant. He was knighted in the New Year 2010 Honours for services to healthcare, and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2015.
