Who Areeba Hamid is

Areeba Hamid is Co-Executive Director of Greenpeace UK, appointed alongside Will McCallum in August 2022 — the first time in the organisation's history the role has been held by two people. Born in India, she studied political science and development and worked for the Economic & Political Weekly before joining Greenpeace India as a campaigner. From 2006 to 2020 she held senior roles across multiple Greenpeace offices worldwide, campaigning on marine conservation, coal expansion in India, rainforest destruction in Indonesia, and tar sands in North America. She rejoined Greenpeace in 2022 from The Sunrise Project, where she led their global finance programme targeting institutional fossil-fuel funding. She is the first woman and first person of colour to lead Greenpeace in the UK, and has been quoted in UK press linking environmental issues — particularly air pollution — to public health outcomes.
