Biography

Dr Ellen Welch is an NHS GP based in Cumbria with twenty years of clinical experience, including a background in Emergency Medicine and work as a cruise ship doctor, expedition medic, and repatriation doctor. She served as co-chair of the Doctors' Association UK (DAUK), a grassroots non-profit membership organisation representing frontline doctors across the United Kingdom, founded in 2018. She graduated from Liverpool School of Medicine in 2004, intercalating in medical journalism at the University of Westminster, and holds a BA in medical journalism. Welch has written widely for trade and national press — including The Guardian, The Independent, and the BMJ — and has appeared on radio and television, including LBC and Times Radio, in her capacity at DAUK. She is the author of seven books on NHS topics, most recently Why Can't I See My GP? (2024), which became an Amazon bestseller before publication and was sent by DAUK to every Member of Parliament and NHS Integrated Care Board chair. She is known for arguing that general practice is in crisis and that pay restoration and investment in primary care are essential to sustaining the NHS.
