Who Prof Laurie Tomlinson is
Professor Laurie Tomlinson is Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where she joined in 2013 after being awarded a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship. She also holds an honorary appointment as Consultant Nephrologist at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. Before joining LSHTM, she trained as a specialist nephrologist and worked as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. Her research uses large-scale electronic health record data — including through the OpenSAFELY platform — to study kidney disease, hypertension, and the safety and effectiveness of medicines, and she leads the LSHTM Electronic Health Records (EHR) Research Group. She is known publicly for research challenging received wisdom on hypertension prescribing by ethnicity and age, and for leading the largest study to date on long-term kidney outcomes after COVID-19.
