Who Dr Matthew Hobbs is

Dr Matthew Hobbs is Director of Research at Prostate Cancer UK, a post he has held since June 2020 having joined the charity in 2013 as Deputy Director of Research. He oversees the charity's research strategy, making funding decisions and leading horizon scanning and impact assessment across the prostate cancer research landscape. He is well known across the medical research sector for providing informal advice to other funders and delivering masterclasses for the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), and has served as an elected Trustee of the National Cancer Research Institute. Prior to Prostate Cancer UK he was Head of Research at Diabetes UK (2012–13) and Senior Project Manager for the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. He commissioned and publicly advocates for the £42 million TRANSFORM prostate cancer screening trial, and has argued that improved diagnostics mean the harms of screening may now be sufficiently reduced to make a national programme viable.

“We know from past trials that screening based on PSA can save men's lives, but not nearly enough. More research is needed to plug critical evidence gaps and to find the safest and most effective way to screen men for prostate cancer, ensuring the benefits outweigh the harms.”
