Who Samira Saberian is

Samira Saberian is a PhD student and research assistant in the Health Inequalities Policy Research Group (HIP-R) within the Department of Public Health, Policy and Systems at the University of Liverpool. Her doctoral research, funded by the Hugh Greenwood Legacy Fund and the University of Liverpool, focuses on socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities in neonatal mortality in England and Wales. She was lead author of a 2025 retrospective cohort study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, which used data on more than 700,000 babies admitted to NHS neonatal units between 2012 and 2022. The study was the first in the UK to assess both socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities in neonatal units across all stages of pregnancy while accounting for maternal and birth-related factors. She has argued publicly that integrated approaches are needed to strengthen clinical care while also addressing the wider social conditions affecting families. She has also contributed to research mapping policy interventions to tackle ethnic health inequalities in maternal and neonatal health in England.
