Biography

Alan Walker CBE FBA is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy and Social Gerontology at the University of Sheffield, where he joined in 1977 and was appointed to a full chair in 1985. He is a specialist in social gerontology and co-developed the concept of social quality; he chairs the European Foundation on Social Quality and co-founded Sheffield's Healthy Lifespan Institute. He directed the £22 million New Dynamics of Ageing Research Programme (2005–15), the £6.5 million MOPACT programme (2013–17), and the £3.5 million ESRC Growing Older Programme (1999–2004). He has published more than 30 books, over 200 reports and more than 300 journal papers, with work translated into more than 20 languages. He is known for arguing that responses to demographic ageing are shaped by politics and ideology rather than demography alone, and for advocating social policy reform to improve quality of life across the life course.
