Biography

Professor Andrew Fisher is a consultant in severe lung disease and the Lung Clinical Lead for the ARCs (Assessment and Recovery Centres) Programme at NHS Blood and Transplant, as well as Professor of Respiratory Transplant Medicine at Newcastle University. He has worked as a consultant in advanced lung disease, pulmonary hypertension and lung transplantation since 2004, and holds an honorary consultant post at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is Deputy Director of the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit in Organ Donation and Transplantation, and his research focuses on optimising donor organ quality prior to transplantation and improving patient survival after lung transplant. He is a Past President of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (2016–2019) and a member of the British Transplant Society Council. He is known for leading national clinical trials in lung transplantation, including the E-CLAD UK study into treatment of chronic lung allograft dysfunction, and for his role in establishing and delivering the UK's first national ARCs pilot programme.
