Josef Coresh, MD, PhD is the Founding Director of the Optimal Aging Institute at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a Professor of Population Health and Medicine, holding the Terry and Mel Karmazin endowed chair. He is an epidemiologist and internationally recognised expert in aging and vascular disease epidemiology of the brain, heart, and kidney, with over 1,000 published scientific papers cited more than 420,000 times on Google Scholar. He co-led the ACHIEVE randomised controlled trial, published in The Lancet in 2023, which provided the most rigorous evidence that hearing intervention slows cognitive decline by 48% over three years in older adults at heightened dementia risk. In January 2025 he was senior author on a Nature Medicine study estimating the lifetime dementia risk after age 55 at 42%—more than twice previous estimates—and projecting approximately one million new US dementia cases annually by 2060. He has been quoted in UK and international press coverage on dementia prevention, vascular risk factors, and the preventability of age-related cognitive decline. He received the top scientific and patient impact awards of the US National Kidney Foundation (Eknoyan and Hume Awards) and the American Society of Nephrology (Belding Scribner Award).
