Biography

Mr Marius Berman is a Consultant Cardiothoracic & Transplant Surgeon and Clinical Director for Transplantation at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UK's leading heart and lung hospital. He is the Associate National Clinical Lead for Organ Retrieval at NHS Blood and Transplant — the first Royal Papworth surgeon and the first-ever cardiothoracic surgeon to hold that position. He is also the consultant lead for patient safety in surgery and transplantation, and has extensive experience of mechanical circulatory and respiratory support. He completed a post-CCT fellowship in adult heart and lung transplantation and a fellowship in pulmonary endarterectomy surgery at Royal Papworth from 2006, holding an MD and Master in Cardiothoracic Surgery from Tel Aviv University and an FRCS (CTh). He serves as Course Director of the annual Masterclass in Cardiothoracic Organ Retrieval, Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support, and has acted as principal investigator on international heart transplant trials. He has publicly argued that the principal challenges facing UK transplantation are retrieval-team capacity, workforce, and innovation in organ perfusion technology.
