Biography
Dr Shoo Lee is a retired Canadian neonatologist and health economist, currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and Honorary Physician at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. He is President of the Canadian Neonatal Foundation and founded the Canadian Neonatal Network in 1995, a research collaboration spanning 30 hospitals and 17 universities across Canada. He received his medical degree from the University of Singapore, completed neonatal fellowship training at Boston Children's Hospital, and holds a PhD in Health Policy (Economics) from Harvard University. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, appointed in recognition of his contributions to neonatal medicine. He gained prominent UK press coverage in February 2025 when he chaired an international panel of 14 neonatologists that held a London press conference challenging the medical evidence underpinning the murder convictions of nurse Lucy Letby, arguing that deaths and injuries were attributable to natural causes or suboptimal medical care. His 1989 academic paper on neonatal air embolism had previously been relied upon by the prosecution at Letby's trial, and he has stated publicly that his research was misinterpreted at that trial.
