Biography

Sir Ciarán Devane is the inaugural Chief Executive of The NHS Alliance, the membership body formed in April 2026 from the merger of NHS Providers and the NHS Confederation, representing frontline NHS organisations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. He previously served as Chief Executive of the British Council (2015–2020) and Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support (2007–2014), for which he received a knighthood in 2015 for services to cancer patients. He also served as a non-executive director on NHS England's board from 2012 to 2015 and is Chair of the Health Service Executive in Ireland. In public advocacy he has argued that the NHS must shift towards neighbourhood-based care and prevention, warning that a hospital-centred model is not sustainable given rising chronic illness and falling healthy life expectancy. He has also called for social care to be placed on an equal footing with the health service. He was announced as the new Chair of Council at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, effective 1 January 2027.
