MPs press for NHS dental contract reform as ministers point to £4 billion in funding and a longer-term overhaul

In Commons questions on 20 October, David Reed (Conservative) said 86% of respondents to his survey could not access an NHS dentist and asked whether the lack of catchment areas makes appointments harder to get. Asked by Helen Maguire (Liberal Democrat) to reform the contract now, he said units of activity "have not aged well" and that the Government wants to look more at outcomes.
  3. In the Commons Health Bill debate on 7 September, Liberal Democrats pressed the issue through amendments. Tom Gordon said North Yorkshire residents with access to an NHS dentist appointment had fallen from 50% to 37% over two years, and that contract reform had seen little progress. Helen Morgan said new clause 18 would introduce a scheme to end dental deserts. Charlotte Cane described dentists losing money once they do three fillings within one unit of treatment.
  4. Karin Smyth, replying in that debate, said the Government is committed to rebuilding dentistry. She listed an urgent care safety net, contract reform and a 10-year workforce plan.
