The States of Guernsey against the UK state, and against the island economy
Five workforces indexed to 100 in 2015: States of Guernsey core government grew 18.6% by 2025, UK general government 16.5%, the UK Civil Service 31.9%, the UK private sector 8.8%, and everyone in work in Guernsey 7.1%.
Read this with the chart: Growth only, never levels: the series are rebased to 100 because 5,230 Guernsey posts and 5.08 million UK ones cannot share an axis. UK general government is central plus local government, excluding public corporations, which is the closest match to Guernsey's Committees subtotal (that too excludes the trading and controlled entities). UK figures are FTE at June of each year from one ONS release, except the private sector line, which is headcount on the ONS's own series excluding the effects of major reclassifications. The Guernsey employment line is people employed or self-employed at June and stops at 2024, the latest published; it also steps 4.5% between 2015 and 2016, a break the bulletin does not explain, so read its start with care.
