BIOGRAPHY
Gordon Cochrane is Chief Executive Officer of Healthcare Homes Group, a care home and homecare operator headquartered near Colchester, Essex. The company lists 48 care homes across East Anglia and the south of England, plus Manorcourt Homecare branches in Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. He has overall responsibility for finance, business development, HR, quality, clinical governance and operations.
Cochrane is a chartered accountant by profession. He worked at Ernst & Young before entering health and social care in 2001 as financial director of a national care operator, according to the company's own biography. He joined Healthcare Homes in October 2016 as Commercial Director. Companies House records him as a director of Healthcare Homes Group Limited and Healthcare Homes Holdings Limited from 30 March 2017.
Healthcare Homes announced his promotion to chief executive in April 2017 (HealthInvestor and Care Home Professional reported it on 11 and 12 May 2017). The founders, David Bates and Graham Lomer, said at the time that they had known him for many years and wanted to concentrate on growth while he ran the existing services. The same announcement brought in Helen Gidlow as group chief operating officer and promoted Matt King to group finance director.
In September 2019 Cochrane, Gidlow and King completed a management buyout of Healthcare Homes Holdings Limited from Bates and Lomer. The founders stayed on as non-executive directors and Philip George remained chairman. The group then ran 37 residential and nursing homes and 13 homecare branches, with more than 3,000 staff.
He has written and spoken on the funding of adult social care. In a feature for Care Management Matters in early 2025 and in a Bournemouth Echo report in December 2024, he argued that government funding for local authorities did not cover the cost of higher employer National Insurance contributions and National Living Wage increases.
