Dr Pete Calveley

Chief Executive Officer, Barchester Healthcare

Dr Pete Calveley has been chief executive of Barchester Healthcare since 2014. A former GP, he previously ran Four Seasons Health Care.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Pete Calveley is chief executive of Barchester Healthcare, which runs more than 260 care homes and hospitals in the UK. He took the role on 2 June 2014. Welltower, the US healthcare property investor, bought Barchester in October 2025 in a deal Property Week reported at £5.2bn, and said the existing management team would stay.

Calveley trained in medicine at the University of Leeds. He held NHS hospital posts in Leeds and Bradford from 1982 to 1987, then worked as a GP in Lincoln until 2007. During those years he also held part-time roles with Lincolnshire primary care trusts, according to a 2012 Guardian profile. The Barchester Charitable Foundation says he was a member of the former Department of Health Forward Thinking Group.

He moved into care provision in 2005 as part-time medical director of Four Seasons Health Care, became chief operating officer in 2007 and chief executive in 2008. In 2012 the company ran 445 care homes and 61 hospital and specialist units, and Terra Firma took it over that year. Barchester announced his appointment as its chief executive in 2013, and he took up the post the following June, succeeding interim chief executive Willie MacDiarmid.

At Barchester he introduced a programme called Quality First. In a July 2024 interview with Care Home Professional he said the proportion of homes rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC had risen from 40% when he joined to 86.6%. In the same month he told Caring Times that Barchester had brought a judicial review against the CQC over its single assessment framework, because some of its homes had gone almost seven years without an inspection. In the Care Home Professional interview he described eight concurrent digital programmes across the estate, covering rostering, electronic care records and digital medication monitoring.

Calveley has served on the board of Care England, the sector's representative body, according to the Barchester Charitable Foundation, where he is also a trustee. Companies House shows him as a director of the Barchester Healthcare Foundation since January 2017. In December 2025 he won the Elderly Care Leader award at the HealthInvestor Power List, the fifth time he has been honoured at the ceremony according to The Carer.
