Rt Hon Damian Green is a Senior Adviser at Bridgehead Communications. He provides strategic counsel to the firm's social care, health and policy-focused clients, bringing more than three decades of frontline political and policy experience at the highest levels of British government.
Rt Hon Damian Green is Chair of The Social Care Foundation and one of the most experienced figures in British public life on the future of social care. He served as First Secretary of State, effectively the Deputy Prime Minister, and was the Conservative Member of Parliament for Ashford from 1997 to 2024.
He chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Social Care from 2019 to 2024, convening cross-party dialogue, gathering evidence from sector leaders, and pressing for sustainable long-term funding reform. He has authored major policy reports on the financial sustainability of the care system and the integration of health and social care.
Ministerial career
In government, Damian held several senior ministerial roles, including Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice, and Immigration Minister at the Home Office. Earlier in his career he served in the No.10 Policy Unit under Prime Minister John Major, advising on domestic policy and public service reform.
Before politics: fourteen years in journalism
Damian came into government from financial and business journalism, where he spent fourteen years. He was appointed a financial journalist by BBC Radio in 1978 and joined Channel 4 News as a business producer in 1982. After a year as business news editor at The Times in 1984, he returned to Channel 4 as business editor in 1985, and from 1987 until 1992 was City editor and presenter of Channel 4's Business Daily, leaving television for Downing Street.
It is an unusual combination, and a useful one for clients whose reputation problem is a commercial or financial one. Damian has both written the story from a business desk and had to answer it from the despatch box. He read philosophy, politics and economics at Balliol College, Oxford, and was President of the Oxford Union in 1977.
