Modular surgical robotics

Surgical robotics & devices

Cambridge-built modular soft-tissue surgical robot, Versius, designed to fit into existing operating rooms as a portable alternative to fixed-tower systems.

The read

CMR Surgical has raised well over $1bn since 2014 to develop Versius, a portable, modular alternative to fixed-tower robots like Intuitive's da Vinci. By 2026 the system had treated more than 45,000 patients across more than 30 countries, and the company describes Versius as the second most-utilised soft-tissue surgical robot in the world.

The company made roughly a third of its workforce redundant in 2023 as part of a restructuring, but has since raised fresh capital and secured FDA clearance for its next-generation Versius Plus, positioning it for a 2026 US commercial launch.

The Bridgehead view

CMR is the clearest UK challenger to Intuitive Surgical's dominance in soft-tissue robotics, but its reliance on repeated late-stage debt-and-equity raises rather than profitability reflects the capital intensity that has forced consolidation elsewhere in the sector.
