Textile-based orthopaedic implants
Leeds manufacturer of textile-based implants for ligament and tendon reconstruction, originally spun out of ACL-repair research in 1982.
The read
Xiros makes polyester textile-based implants used in ligament and tendon reconstruction, tracing its roots to ACL-repair research from the 1980s under its original name, Neoligaments. Its products span shoulder, knee, hand/wrist/elbow and foot/ankle procedures.
The company has held CE marking since 1995 and, more recently, gained EU MDR Class III certification for its JewelACL implant in 2023, alongside FDA approval for its US business. It has stayed a small, independent, specialist manufacturer through four decades of consolidation among larger device makers.
The Bridgehead view
Xiros's survival as an independent, single-category implant manufacturer since 1982 is unusual in a sector where larger players routinely acquire specialist technology; its longevity is itself evidence that a defensible regulatory and IP position can substitute for scale.
