3D-printed, multi-grip bionic prosthetic arm, the Hero Arm, adopted by the NHS and equivalent European health systems for below-elbow limb differences.

The read

Open Bionics makes the Hero Arm, a 3D-printed, multi-grip bionic prosthetic for below-elbow limb differences, available to eligible NHS patients across England, Wales and Scotland as well as equivalent health systems in France, Germany and the Netherlands. In 2025 it launched wireless, waterproof Hero Pro and Hero RGD models.

Its capital base is smaller and more bootstrapped than most of this cohort: in March 2026 it took a £600,000 loan from NatWest secured against its own intellectual property, to fund six additional US clinics, rather than raising further equity.

The Bridgehead view

Open Bionics is a genuine UK hardware success story that scaled through healthcare-system adoption rather than mega-rounds, a useful counterpoint to CMR's capital-intensive model and a different, leaner path to traction in UK medtech.
