BIOGRAPHY
Jenny Hearl is Chief Executive of Eothen Homes, a North East charity that runs three care homes, in Gosforth, Whitley Bay and Wallsend. A registered general nurse, she joined Eothen in 1993 and became chief executive in 1997. A voluntary board of trustees governs the charity, and Hearl is the registered provider on its behalf with the Care Quality Commission.
Eothen's team page says she keeps the charity's aims on track, plans future strategy and development, and works to keep the organisation viable. In a March 2024 interview with Northern Insight she said she managed the charity's day-to-day operations, spent as much time as she could in the homes, and had been chief executive for 28 years. She said Eothen employed 165 staff, ran from a head office in Cramlington, and had paid the Real Living Wage since 2018.
The largest project of her tenure was the Wallsend home. In March 2015 Eothen announced a £6.2 million dementia home there, backed by Barclays, with an expected 42 new jobs. Hearl said the design drew on the Hogewey Village concept in the Netherlands and that nothing like it existed in the North East. She told Northern Insight the home opened in 2016 and that it was a great achievement for a small charity. In the same interview she said Eothen ranked among the top 20 small UK care home providers on carehome.co.uk reviews, and that recruitment and the lasting effects of the pandemic remained the main pressures.
