GP electronic patient records
The dominant GP clinical system in England, supplying electronic patient records to more than half of general practices, now under its third owner in four years.
The read
EMIS Health (formerly Egton Medical Information Systems) supplies the primary GP clinical system used by more than half of general practices in England, alongside community pharmacy and acute-care software, making it one of the two dominant primary-care IT suppliers alongside TPP's SystmOne.
Its ownership has changed twice in four years: UnitedHealth Group's Optum completed a roughly £1.2bn acquisition in October 2023, then sold the wider Optum UK business, including EMIS, to US private equity firm TPG in a deal that closed 13 March 2026. The product was rebranded from EMIS Health to Optum in March 2025, though flagship product EMIS Web retains its name.
The Bridgehead view
Two ownership changes in four years for a system embedded in half of England's GP practices is a live case study in how little influence NHS commissioners have over who ends up controlling primary-care infrastructure; TPG's stewardship, not EMIS's product roadmap, is now the thing worth watching.
