TPP (SystmOne)

NHS-wide clinical record system

Clinical workflow & hospital operations

Privately held, founder-controlled Leeds software house behind SystmOne, one of the two dominant clinical record systems used across NHS primary, community and mental health care.

The read

The Phoenix Partnership (TPP) built SystmOne, a single shared clinical record system used across more than 7,600 NHS organisations spanning GP practices, community services, mental health and other care settings, making it one of the two dominant systems in NHS primary and community care alongside EMIS.

Unlike most of this sector, TPP remains privately held and founder-controlled by Frank Hester rather than venture- or PE-backed. The company has received over £590m in public contract income since 2016, and its most recent accounts show a sharp jump in profitability.

The Bridgehead view

TPP is the outlier in this category: a founder-controlled NHS software supplier generating PE-scale margins without PE ownership, which makes its financial disclosures a live media story in a way that arm's-length corporate ownership elsewhere in the sector generally isn't.
