Mendelian's MendelScan software runs in the background of GP electronic health record systems, matching patients' recorded symptoms and history against published diagnostic criteria for thousands of rare and hard-to-diagnose conditions, and flagging likely candidates for a specialist referral. Its first large-scale NHS deployment, with the Modality Partnership super-practice, covered more than 45 GP practices across multiple English regions.
The company has been funded primarily through Innovate UK grants rather than disclosed venture rounds, and won an NHS AI in Health and Care Award, the same national funding programme that has separately backed Sonrai Analytics' cancer-screening AI.
The Bridgehead view
Mendelian's grant-funded, GP-record-mining model is a quieter, more workflow-integrated diagnostics story than the imaging-AI names in this cohort, and a useful example of NHS-funded proof of concept, rather than commercial venture backing, being enough to reach dozens of GP practices before a company has raised any priced equity round.
