Lung cancer diagnosis AI

Diagnostics & imaging

AI decision-support software that stratifies the cancer risk of lung nodules found on CT scans, the first such tool cleared by the FDA.

The read

Optellum's Virtual Nodule Clinic analyses CT scans to estimate the malignancy risk of incidentally found lung nodules, helping clinicians decide between immediate biopsy, active surveillance or discharge. It was the first AI-powered clinical decision support software cleared by the FDA for early lung cancer diagnosis, in March 2021.

In January 2026 it was selected for an NHS end-to-end lung cancer diagnostic pathway alongside Intuitive Surgical's robotic bronchoscopy, led by Guy's and St Thomas'. A March 2026 Vanderbilt-led study found its AI cost-effective from a US payer perspective, a harder commercial bar than regulatory clearance alone.

The Bridgehead view

Optellum's move from pilot evaluations to reimbursement-grade evidence and a named NHS end-to-end pathway shows the diagnostics-AI category maturing past the clearance-as-endpoint phase into the harder work of proving payer economics.
