Breath biopsy diagnostics
Cambridge diagnostics company building breath-based tests, its Breath Biopsy platform, to detect cancer and other diseases from volatile organic compounds on a patient's breath.
The read
Owlstone Medical's Breath Biopsy platform analyses volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath to detect disease non-invasively, targeting lung cancer, liver disease and digestive conditions, and is offered to academic, clinical and pharma partners developing their own breath-based diagnostics rather than sold as a single finished test.
In October 2025 it secured a $49.1m grant from the US government's ARPA-H agency for its POSEIDON programme, developing synthetic-sensor multi-cancer early detection tests capable of screening for more than 30 solid tumours from a single breath sample, alongside a January 2025 Series E first close backed by the Gates Foundation.
The Bridgehead view
Owlstone's pivot toward US federal research funding, an ARPA-H grant nearly double its most recent equity round, is a reminder that for genuinely early-stage diagnostic science, government research money can be a more reliable growth lever than venture capital, and a different PR narrative to tell than a typical funding-round story.
